The truth is that yoga can benefit anyone, regardless of age, inflexibility or even disability. There’s a saying among yoga teachers that “If you can breathe, you can do yoga.”

What Is Chair Yoga For Seniors?

Chair yoga is a general term for practices that modify yoga poses so that they can be done while seated in a chair. These modifications make yoga accessible to people who cannot stand or lack the mobility to move easily from standing to seated to supine positions. While seated on chairs, students can do versions of twists, hip stretches, forward bends, and mild backbends.

Who Can Do Chair Yoga?

Anyone! Chair yoga classes are most widely available in senior centers and retirement homes.

Do I Need a Special Chair?

No. There is no need for a special chair. Chairs with wheels are not ideal, since they are unstable, but almost any other chair will do.

Do I Need To Wear Yoga Clothes?

No. You can do chair yoga in your regular clothes.

How Many Minutes is a Chair Yoga Class?

Usually, a chair yoga class lasts 30-45 minutes. However, a chair yoga class can last for 60 minutes as well.

Restorative yoga is a therapeutic style of yoga, which utilizes props (pillows, bolsters, blocks, blankets) to make it easier for the body to get into certain poses, and thus surrender to the pose. Restorative yoga is a quiet practice suitable for students of all levels of experience.

Many of the poses are seated, supine or prone and are held for several minutes.

There is a focus on the breath, being present in the moment, relieving tension and letting go.

Chair Yoga is approved by the Arthritis Foundation to ease the aches and pains of arthritissufferers. You will explore breath, stretches, and relaxation.

The gentle yoga style is a slower and modified version of the basic yoga style. Gentle yoga teaches the importance of balancing the body, mind and breath while moving the joints and stretching the body at a slower to moderate pace.

gentle_yoga1It provides an opportunity to surrender, slow down, and bring steadiness to one’s practice. The gentle variations of sun salutations are offered to build strength and steadiness. There is a focus on the breath, being present in the moment, relieving tension and letting go.

The use of props and pose modifications are offered to help achieve an effortless state. Perfect for beginners or experienced practitioners who want to move in a nurturing and supportive way.

Goal: Provide a mindful yoga practice for people of all levels to grow and learn through the experience of yoga.

gentle_yogaIt is designed for beginners and people who did yoga before and want to resume their practice. This class offers basic instructions of yoga practice, an introduction to correct breathing and postures (asanas) as well as a gentle flow to accustom yourself to the practice and become familiar with your body’s needs and abilities.

We will be exploring and balancing body, breath and mind in order to experience peace and well-being. The beginner’s yoga sessions include postures, breathing and a period of relaxation.
