Yoga For Seniors

If the idea of getting down on the floor to do anything reminds you of those old “Help, I’ve fallen and I can’t get up” commercials, then imageChair Yoga is an ideal way for you to regain mobility and strength. The truth is that yoga can benefit anyone, regardless of age, inflexibility or even disability. There’s a saying among yoga teachers that “If you can breathe, you can do yoga.”

What Is Chair Yoga For Seniors?

Chair yoga is a general term for practices that modify yoga poses so that they can be done while seated in a chair. These modifications make yoga accessible to people who cannot stand or lack the mobility to move easily from standing to seated to supine positions. While seated on chairs, students can do versions of twists, hip stretches, forward bends, and mild backbends.

Who Can Do Chair Yoga?

Anyone! Chair yoga classes are most widely available in senior centers and retirement homes.

Do I Need a Special Chair?

No. There is no need for a special chair. Chairs with wheels are not ideal, since they are unstable, but almost any other chair will do.

Do I Need To Wear Yoga Clothes?

No. You can do chair yoga in your regular clothes.

How Many Minutes is a Chair Yoga Class?

Usually, a chair yoga class lasts 30-45 minutes. However, a chair yoga class can last for 60 minutes as well.

Benefits of Chair Yoga For Seniors

  • Experience RelaxationSlow, deep breathing through the nose helps to cleanse the body on many different levels. We also practice various mediations techniques.
  • Reduced Blood PressureYoga has been reported to reduce high blood pressure, often a serious health concern for seniors. Yoga incorporates calming techniques and physical activity, which both help to lower blood pressure. Indeed, participants in a medical study in India saw their blood pressure decrease during three months of yoga. A second study, cited by the Inner IDEA website, reported that yoga’s breathing techniques reduced blood pressure better than a soothing activity such as listening to relaxing music.
  • Improved Flexibility and Range of MotionAs you age and become less active, you may notice you are not as flexible as you were at a younger age. Yoga enhances flexibility and joint range of motion through physical poses that stretch muscles and lubricate joints. Those suffering from arthritis and other stiff-joint conditions can also benefit from yoga.
  • Lift Your SpiritKnowing that you can participate in yoga for seniors helps you get more in touch with yourself. Knowing that you can work within your limits and make yourself feel better emotionally and physically is a great benefit.
  • Keep Moving! You need to keep moving to prevent the stiff muscles and achy joints that are common complaints among seniors. The best remedy is yoga for seniors. Muscles and joints were designed to move and basic yoga stretches will do just that, get you moving again in a gentle stress-free way. The gentle bending and moving of yoga is important for relieving stiff joints. As they say, you have to “move it or loose it!”

restorative_yoga

Restorative yoga is a therapeutic style of yoga, which utilizes props (pillows, bolsters, blocks, blankets) to make it easier for the body to get into certain poses, and thus surrender to the pose. Restorative yoga is a quiet practice suitable for students of all levels of experience.

Many of the poses are seated, supine or prone and are held for several minutes.

There is a focus on the breath, being present in the moment, relieving tension and letting go.

Benefits – the antidote to stress is relaxation. Restorative yoga focuses on relaxation, renewal, effortlessness and ease. This practice soothes your nervous system, helps you quiet your mind and invites you to release deeply held tension. We also use breath as a tool to release tension.

Yoga helps You remain Healthy and Active

chair_yogaAs the body ages, muscles and joints begin to tighten which causes discomfort and anxiety about one’s physical well-being. When mobility decreases, many seniors find they start moping around and some even fall into depression. Yoga can reverse these feelings by simply giving you a bit of physical progress each and every day.

Yoga gives you more Energy

Yoga can help you maintain your mental capacity and increase your energy level. Just one yoga session can lift your spirits and brighten your day. If you have never tried yoga before, you are in for a special treat!

Chair Yoga

Chair Yoga is approved by the Arthritis Foundation to ease the aches and pains of arthritissufferers. You will explore breath, stretches, and relaxation.

The gentle yoga style is a slower and modified version of the basic yoga style. Gentle yoga teaches the importance of balancing the body, mind and breath while moving the joints and stretching the body at a slower to moderate pace.

gentle_yoga1It provides an opportunity to surrender, slow down, and bring steadiness to one’s practice. The gentle variations of sun salutations are offered to build strength and steadiness. There is a focus on the breath, being present in the moment, relieving tension and letting go.

The use of props and pose modifications are offered to help achieve an effortless state. Perfect for beginners or experienced practitioners who want to move in a nurturing and supportive way.

Goal: Provide a mindful yoga practice for people of all levels to grow and learn through the experience of yoga.

gentle_yogaIt is designed for beginners and people who did yoga before and want to resume their practice. This class offers basic instructions of yoga practice, an introduction to correct breathing and postures (asanas) as well as a gentle flow to accustom yourself to the practice and become familiar with your body’s needs and abilities.

We will be exploring and balancing body, breath and mind in order to experience peace and well-being. The beginner’s yoga sessions include postures, breathing and a period of relaxation.
